Ceramics, wood-fired

Mariejosée Desjean

I do ceramics to create pieces that engage with our playful side, while still being useful in the daily life. With my work, I hope to help to create poetic and joyful environments. Clay has always fuelled new projects and ideas for me and has been my medium since 1996. Its malleability allows me to materialize precisely what my imagination creates. My imagination is stimulated by what surrounds me and a willingness to reinvent objects that catch my eye. The details I elaborate make each of my pieces unique.

My work is strongly inspired by Asian art, especially traditional Japanese ceramic art. The diversity of textures and the effects created by the flames in a wood or gas kiln fascinate me and characterize both my functional pieces and my sculptural work. Removing pieces from the kiln after a high fire maturation is always a magical moment for me. I take pleasure imagining that those who live with my creations derive from them a renewed joy daily.
